Shadow Series

The Shadow series explores parts of my personal journey regarding inclusion.  My musings ended up in a study of shadows. In history and in common folklore, shadows are often linked with darkness, evil and the color black.  I considered the narrative and imagined what it would be like if that were different. The resulting sculptures reverse expectations, resulting in pieces where black leads and white becomes the shadow.   I believe strongly in changing the tenet of white is good and black is bad not only to support the quest for equity for people of color, but to invite a conversation in which we challenge the status quo.

These sculptures are a mix of concrete and dyes modeled on a steel armature, then hand polished.  The posts are crafted from steel rods.  The bases are either concrete or welded metal colored with patinas.
